Are cops looking to give speeding tickets to certain cars more than others?
After analyzing Insurance.com’s list of the most ticketed cars, we’ve learned that there are a few vehicles that get more tickets than others. Before buying your dream car, you might want to make sure it’s not on this list.
As you read, keep in mind that the average ticket rate for drivers of all vehicles is 21.1%. Each and every single vehicle on this list breaks that average.
#1: Lexus ES 300
The Lexus ES 300 soared to the top of the list of the most ticketed cars after its release in the early 2,000s. This four-door sedan is known for its great level of power and high performance and it seems speeders love it! Around 33.4% of Lexus ES 300 drivers have gotten a speeding ticket.
#2: Nissan 350Z
The Nissan 350 Z was popular from 2003 to 2008 for its affordable price of just about $10,000. But that’s before factoring in its 32.5% ticket rate. A single speeding ticket can increase that price by up to another $1,000, 10% of the MSRP.
#3: Dodge Charger SE/SXT
These two models were both part of the Charger-series’s sixth generation. More importantly, they’re both the third most ticketed car on the market with 32.1% of drivers getting tickets. It’s also interesting that the Charger series just happens to include the standard vehicle of many police departments.
#4: Volkswagen Jetta GL
This was an early 2000s compact car designed for more affluent drivers. After all, GL stands for “Grand Luxury” and luxury sedans are often pretty pricey. Factor in the 31.4% ticket rate and you’re in for an even more expensive ride.
#5: Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS/LT
Chevy’s Monte Carlo LS and LT didn’t last long on the market, thanks to the catastrophic loss of productivity in Detroit. Even so, these luxury muscle cars have “helped” drivers rack up an average of around one ticket for every three drivers (30.8%).
#6: Mazda Mazda3S
The Mazda3 series has been running smoothly since it first hit the road in 2003. That’s almost 20 years of compact cars running the streets. But cops also run the streets, prowling for law-breakers. Drivers of the Mazda3S reported a ticket rate of 30.3%.
#7: Volkswagen GTI
There are half a dozen GTI variants out there racking up speeding tickets in all corners of the globe. In the US, they’ve netted drivers an average of 3 tickets for every 10 drivers. At 30.3%, this series is tied with the Mazda3S for the sixth most ticketed car.
#8: Dodge Stratus SXT
The Dodge Stratus SXT has been an affordable four-door sedan since it first hit the road. Unfortunately, add in the price of speeding tickets, which can be around $1,000, and you’re in for a bumpy ride. At 30.2%, this is the eighth most ticketed ride on the market.
#9: Acura 3.0S
Acura’s 3.0S was the “premium” trim model of the 3.0 line. This second-generation vehicle may have been the predecessor of the Honda Accord but far exceeds it in terms of speeding tickets. 30.1% of all owners received at least one speeding ticket.
#10: Toyota Tacoma
Few other vehicles on the civilian market have been as successful as the Toyota Tacoma series. These pickup trucks have been roaming the vast expanse of American roads ever since 1995. That makes them old enough to have graduated college and gotten a job writing for the WinIt app. But their 30.1% ticket rate makes them a good deal more expensive than their sticker price.
#11: Mazda Tribute
This compact SUV model saw about 11 years of production, plenty enough time to pump out just about 100,000 models. Insurance.com’s data show that roughly 29,900 (29.9%) of those drivers got at least one speeding ticket.
#12: Subaru Impreza WRX
WRX stands for “World Rally Experimental.” Its design was heavily influenced by elements of rally car racing, which is probably one of the reasons why speeders love it so much. At 29.9%, this is the 12th most ticketed series on the road.
#13: Lexus LS 400 Series
Made from 1990 to 1994, this series didn’t last all that long. That said, thanks to the millions of kilometers of testing engineers put it through while in development, it managed to pick up serious traction in its short time. Today, 29.9% of its drivers have gotten speeding tickets.
#14: Subaru Impreza 2.5I
The 2.5I models were the only Subaru Imprezas released in North America and the police were soon to follow. 29.8% of Subaru Impreza 2.5I drivers have gotten at least one speeding ticket.
#15: Mercedes-Benz C300 4 Matic
Pretty much anything that ends with “Benz” can be considered a luxury vehicle, hence why rappers are so in love with Mercedes. Unfortunately, traffic violations bureaus are also in love with the Benzes. Around 29.6% of drivers of Mercedes-Benz C300 4 Matics have gotten at least one ticket.
#16: Chevrolet Malibu 2LT
You might not expect much speed from a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine, but traffic ticket data would show you just how wrong you are. At #16 on our list, the Chevrolet Malibu 2LT has brought in hefty speeding ticket fines for 29.4% of its owners.
#17: Lincoln LS
Ford Lincoln’s LS is exactly what an LS should be: a luxury sedan. This tank of a car weighs in about 3,700 pounds, about 800 pounds above the national average. Despite its hefty build, 29.3% of its drivers managed to use its high-powered v8 engine to pick up tickets.
#18: Ford Fusion S
Another Ford on our list is the pricey Ford Fusion S, clocking in above $23,000. Not all that high on the Car and Driver rating index, the Fusion S still manages to be high on the radar of traffic violations bureau officers. The speeding ticket rate for this ride is a flat 29.0%.
#19: Mazda Mazda3I
This compact car is one of four on our list. At 28.8%, it is the 19th most ticketed vehicle on the road today.
#20: Chevrolet Tahoe K1500
Chevy sure knows how to build a speeder’s daydream. The Tahoe K1500 has led to drivers receiving millions of dollars in speeding tickets at a rate of 286 per 1,000 drivers (28.6%).
#21: Toyota Scion TC
The Toyota Scion TC went through two generations over the course of its 12 years of production. A lot changed, but one thing remained the same: 28.5% of drivers of Scion TC-series compact cars got speeding tickets.
#22: Dodge Ram 2500
Dodge Ram trucks aren’t known for being affordable, so the fact that 27.8% of drivers get speeding tickets isn’t all that shocking. But, if you’re already hesitant to throw down the thirty-something thousand dollars for the truck, you might want to think twice about those tickets.
#23: Ford Fusion SE
There are two kinds of Fusion SEs: hybrid and not hybrid. Naturally, they have plenty of things in common and plenty of other things different. One of the most important commonalities is that 27.7% of them earned tickets for their drivers.
#24: Hyundai Tiburon
Hyundai’s Tiburon is a sports coupe designed with speed in mind. That’s probably what makes it such a desirable car for speeders and racing enthusiasts. About 27.7% of all Tuburon drivers have gotten at least one speeding ticket.
#25: KIA Spectra EX/LX/SX
KIA is one of the last manufacturers you might expect to show up on a list of the most-ticketed cars, also known as the most popular cars among speeders. Nonetheless, 27.7% of Spectra drivers have earned themselves at least one ticket.
#26: Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
This SUV has a great deal of horsepower (up to 360) with a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. Of course, it also has a price tag of over $40,000 and a ticket rate of 27.7%.
#27: Honda Element
Most of the vehicles on this list are larger rides with higher weights and more horsepower. The Honda Element is an exception to that trend. 27.6% of drivers of this tiny little thing have reported receiving speeding tickets.
#28: Chevrolet Cobalt
Chevy’s Cobalt is average in just about every way. It has an average curb weight, average engine specs, and an average transmission system. But, with 27.5% of drivers getting speeding tickets, it blows the ticket average out of the water.
#29: Mitsubishi Eclipse GS
These smooth cars have an aesthetic that screams, “Give me your money.” But that screaming carries some serious undertones of “and hit the gas.” Tied with #28 on our list, the Mitsubishi Eclipse GS has a speeding ticket rate of 27.5%.
#30: Cadillac Seville
At more than 1,000 pounds over the average curb weight, the Cadillac Seville is the heaviest sedan on this list. To help carry this weight, it’s high-capacity engine comes ready with 275 horsepower. Naturally, speeders love it. 27.3% Seville drivers report having received a speeding ticket.
#31: Infiniti G35
On the surface, the G35 looks just like any other car out there. But looks can be deceiving. It’s what’s on the inside that matters. Of course, the inside has an engine with a sleek profile that entices speeders to hit the gas. The ticket rate for this model is 27.1%.
#32: Mercury Cougar
The Mercury Cougar has an attractive build reminiscent of the ‘60s and ‘70s. That’s because it first started out in the ‘60s until being discontinued and redesigned in 1999. Of course, speeders haven’t forgotten about the power under the hood of this model—and neither have police. The speeding ticket rate for this vehicle is a flat 27.0%.
#33: Mazda Mazda6S
Yet another Mazda on this list is the Mazda6S, the most recent of the MazdaXs to hit production. Despite its relatively short time in production, speeders have already flocked to it, with 26.8% of them getting at least one speeding ticket.
#34: Chevrolet Impala LT
Chevy’s Impala LT has over 300 horsepower and a price of $31,620. That’s out of the wheelhouse of many drivers, especially when you factor in the price of speeding tickets, which 26.8% of Impala LT drivers get.
#35: Audi S-Series
There are ten models in Audi’s S-series. Each one of them was built with different designs and functions in mind. Despite these differences, the line as a whole still appeals to speeders of all varieties; The ticket rate for Audi’s S-series is 26.7%.
#36: Mini Cooper S
Mini Cooper hasn’t been quite the forerunner in the automotive industry that it once was, but people still love its compact, marque designs. The Mini Cooper S is one great example. But, with a ticket rate of 26.7%, it can get quite a bit more expensive than its sticker price.
#37: Dodge Stratus SE
Just like the Dodge Stratus SXT, the Dodge Stratus SE is a go-to ride for speeders everywhere. With 200 horsepower and only a slightly above average curb weight, the Dodge Stratus SE can pick up some serious speed. That’s probably why 26.7% of its drivers get speeding tickets.
#38: Dodge Ram SLT/ST
Dodge is known for making high-quality pickups. These pickups are often used for mudding, towing, and—that’s right—speeding. About 26.6% of all Dodge Ram SLT or ST owners have gotten at least one speeding ticket.
#39: Ford Escort ZX2
The Ford Escort ZX2 was released in 1998 to replace the Ford Probe. This compact sports car was designed with performance in mind, which is probably what led speeders to choose it as their preferred ride. The ticket rate for drivers of the Ford Escort ZX2 is 26.4%.
#40: Mercury Mountaineer
Last, but certainly not least, is the Mercury Mountaineer. This vehicle comes in 40th place with a ticket rate of 26.2%. That’s 262 tickets for every 1,000 drivers.
