But the best way to dodge parking fines is to not get a ticket in the first place. To help make sure you don’t leave yourself vulnerable to parking tickets, we’ve analyzed New York’s parking ticket data for the first nine months of 2018 to find the most common parking violations.
Below, we’ve detailed the five most common violations, including their associated fines.
Inspection Sticker Expired (NY State)
Official Definition: Standing or parking a vehicle without showing a current New York State inspection sticker.
All vehicles registered in the state of New York are required to get a safety inspection at a DMV-licensed inspection station every 12 months. 1 out of 20 issued parking tickets are a result of failing to display an up-to-date inspection sticker while parking in the city. And that’s on top of the up to $188 fine that you can receive from the DMV.
If you receive one of these tickets, the best way to make sure it can be dismissed is to get an inspection (and save your receipt!) within 24 hours of being issued the ticket.
Fine: $65
No Parking (Non-Commercial)
Official Definition: General No Parking: No parking where parking is not allowed by sign, street marking or traffic control device.
With such a general definition, you’d expect the majority of parking tickets to fall into this catch-all category, but it accounts for less than 7% of all parking violations.
It’s a testament to the specificity of violation types among the nearly 100 violation codes; if there’s a citation for every parking error, fewer will get assigned this more general code.
Fine: $65 in Manhattan; $60 all other areas
Failure to Display Parking Meter Receipt
Official Definition: Failing to show a receipt or tag in the windshield.
Although we imagine parking officers ready with pre-written tickets as soon as your meter hits zero, you actually get a 5-minute grace period after the expiration time on your receipt (avoiding the seventh most common parking violation).
But fail to display your receipt or pay the meter altogether and you’re liable to get nailed with this citation, which represents nearly a tenth of all parking tickets.
Fine: $65 in Manhattan; $35 all other areas
No Standing
Official Definition: General No Standing: Standing or parking where standing is not allowed by sign, street marking or; traffic control device.
We’ll call this one the delivery driver violation — vans and delivery vehicles are responsible for 28% of no standing tickets.
Whether you’re dropping off a fast food order, unloading groceries, or you just ran back to your apartment to grab your phone, you’re vulnerable to get a no standing ticket if your car isn’t parked in a designated parking area.
10.4% of parking violations result from this type of easy-to-make mistake.
This chart may help you better understand the differences between No Parking and No Standing zones:
Fine: $115
No Parking (Street Clean)
Official Definition: Street Cleaning: No parking where parking is not allowed by sign, street marking or traffic control device.
It can be maddening to try to keep track of when alternate side parking rules for street cleaning are or aren’t in effect. The rules are often suspended for major holidays, but also for lesser known holidays (like All Saints Day) and unpredictable events (like snow removal).
So it’s no wonder that, at 16.5%, the most commonly ticketed parking violation by a significant margin was for incorrect street cleaning parking.
Tip: Follow WinIt on Twitter for timely alerts whenever alternate side parking rules are in effect.
Fine: $65 in Manhattan; $45 all other areas
So our number one piece of advice is to pay attention to those street cleaning signs!
